The hotel and its surroundings Noirmoutier
ORIGINS
The Hotel Le Général d’Elbée was originally called “Hôtel Particulier Lebreton des Grapillières”. It was built in 1767 by Sieur Boucheron who undertook the draining of the marshes on the other side of the harbour. The mayor of Noirmoutier at the time (1794 to 1797), Sieur Lebreton des Grapillères, then bought it from him. The building then belonged to several bourgeois families before being abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century.
It was also used as a salt warehouse, then a customs office to finally become a tourist hotel in the 70’s.
THE GENERAL
The hotel now bears the name of one of the royalist generals who led the uprising of the region against the French Revolution. General Maurice d’Elbée never lived here, but was captured in Noirmoutier, tried within these walls, sentenced to death an then executed, in 1794, on the Place d’Armes facing the building.
The Republican Commission, which had requisitioned the hotel, watched the execution from its balconies.
